Yurts are traditional and they are up-to-date. For eons the natives of Central Asia, such as Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan used yurts on account of of their versatility and mobility. Also referred to as "gurs," yurts are traditionally built of felt or canvas. Lately, these round tents are popular replacements for cabins in several state parks, including Oregon and Rhode Island.

Most modern yurts in Canada and the USA are made using new and sophisticated materials. They are designed and constructed to endure severe storms. And putting a yurt together is a complicated undertaking, as they are not designed to be shifted from place to place.
